The story behind the Dodge Durango's evolution is a rather complicated one. As we draw closer to this vehicle's anticipated discontinuation in 2024, let's take a closer look at the behind-the-scenes history of the Dodge Durango. New Vehicle Offers Used Inventory Service Center History of the Dodge Durango The mid-sized SUV, the Dodge Durango, first emerged on the automobile scene in 1997. With its design modeled after a pickup truck with a covered trunk, Dodge hoped to appeal to prospective customers looking for an SUV midway between smaller models like the Ford Explorer and larger cars like the Chevrolet Tahoe. Since then, this beloved vehicle has gone through four generations. The Durango also briefly disappeared from the car scene between 2009 and 2011 before returning to the market. The Story of the Durango Name Did you know that the Dodge Durango received its name from a city in Colorado? Durango is a small town in this state known for its historical connections to America's vast railroad system. This city in Colorado was named after a Mexican state called Durango. By naming this SUV Durango, Dodge hoped to emphasize its revolutionary appearance on the automobile scene. The Evolution of the Durango Dodge first introduced the 1998 model of the Durango toward the end of 1997 as a replacement for its Ramcharger line of vehicles, which Dodge had produced for 28 years. Originally, the Dodge Durango had much of its platform in common with the Dakota pickup truck, meaning that it shared many of the Dakota truck's exterior and interior styling features. The primary change to the Durango's second generation was the introduction of the new and highly powerful 5.7-liter Hemi engine in the lineup. With the reappearance of the Durango on the market in 2011 for its third generation, Dodge made extensive changes inside and out, including giving consumers a choice between a V6 and a V8 engine and a much more spacious interior for its three rows. For its fourth and final iteration in 2020, Dodge decked out the Durango with top-of-the-line exterior features and a choice between a 3.5-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter V8 Hemi engine. Dodge has already announced that the forthcoming 2024 model of the Durango will be the vehicle's last appearance on the market before discontinuation. This is for a few reasons, including that Dodge wants to spend more time adding or updating hybrid and electric cars to its product lines and that the company noticed a decrease in Durango sales over the years. That said, Dodge has yet to comment on what the final 2024 model could look like or if an electrified replacement model exists. Changes to the Durango Exterior When Dodge first released the Durango, this SUV had numerous exterior elements in a retro style, such as its front fenders flared out and positioned lower than the hood, a crosshair grille design, and narrow horizontal headlights. The curved windshield, however, gave the Durango body a modern touch. With the release of the second generation of the Durango, its chassis continued to resemble the Dakota pickup truck, but that all changed in 2007 thanks to the redesigned hood of the vehicle. By the time the third generation of the Durango rolled around, Dodge made an apparent effort to distinguish this SUV from both the Dakota pickup truck and Dodge's other models. The redesigned exterior gave the Durango a more muscular appearance thanks to its sculpted hood, raised front bumper, and slimmed-down split crosshair grille. The rear also now featured glamorous LED racetrack tail lamps and a newly designed trailer hitch. Although the fourth generation received fewer updates to its exterior, the brand-new bumper, grille, and LED headlights gave the Durango a much more modern appearance. How the Durango's Features Changed In its first iteration, much of the Durango's interior resembled the Dakota pickup truck, including a similar dashboard design. A key difference was that the Durango offered a third row of rear-facing seats, allowing the vehicle to fit up to eight people. Dodge later removed this feature because of low market demand and replaced it with the now customary third row facing toward the front of the car, allowing seven people to fit comfortably within the Durango. While the second generation of the Durango more or less possesses the same interior features, the reappearance of the Durango on the car scene in 2011 offered many more stylish and technologically advanced updates. This included many outstanding safety features, such as tire pressure monitoring, all-speed traction control, rear parking assistance, and electronic stability control. The third generation also added touch screens in either a 5-inch or 8.4-inch size. Come 2020, the interior of the Durango received further updates. This included new materials and a standard UConnect infotainment system. Durango Through the Years: Engines and Fuel Efficiency With the V8 engine in its first generation, the Durango achieved 14 mpg in city conditions and 19 mpg while traveling along the highway. This engine also had an impressive 238 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the engine upgrades of the second edition, the Durango boosted its city mpg to 16 and its highway to 21. The V8 engine in this second generation also raised its horsepower to 349. As the Durango evolved, it became even more powerful. With the advent of the third generation, the Durango could reach 294 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque thanks to its V6 engine, compared to 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque with the V8 engine. By 2020, the Durango will also become much more fuel-efficient despite its large and heavy frame, scoring 18 mpg in city conditions and 26 mpg along the highway. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, more commonly known as FCA, makes up one-half of the merger that forms Stellantis, which is a multinational auto manufacturer that owns the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Fiat brands of motor vehicles. Stellantis has recognized the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in today's automotive market and plans to broaden its own selection of EVs. In fact, the company plans to offer more than 75 battery EVs and realize at least 50% of U.S. sales in this segment by 2030. Let's look at some of the most exciting electric models currently available in this ever-growing lineup, as well as a potential all-electric pickup truck slated for release in 2024. Jeep Wrangler 4xe The 4xe is the plug-in hybrid version of Jeep's popular Wrangler model. Originally introduced in late 2020, the 4xe model combines the ruggedness of the Wrangler with the fuel economy and instant torque of a battery electric car. The current 2022 release of the Wrangler 4xe is available in three distinct trims: Sahara 4xe. Rubicon 4xe. High Altitude 4xe. At each trim level, you get a hybrid powertrain that includes two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, and a 2-liter turbocharged I-4 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Powered by this setup, you can expect a fuel economy of 49 MPGe as well as a 21-mile all-electric range. Altogether, you're looking at a driving range of 370 miles before you need to stop to refuel. You can go from Cortland to New York City half a dozen times without a single stop at a fuel pump or charging station. Keep in mind that this is still a Wrangler, so you get to enjoy its renowned off-roading capabilities and its powertrain's environmental friendliness. Not only that, but you also get a variety of excellent features. All trims come with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, remote start capability, a Corning Gorilla Glass windshield, and an infotainment system that includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a nine-speaker sound system. With the Rubicon 4xe, you also get electronic locking differentials and an anti-roll bar, while the Sahara comes standard with driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors. Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Although the history of the Pacifica goes back to the late 1990s, its current iteration saw its beginnings in the 2017 model when it hit the market as the first plug-in hybrid minivan. In 2022, it remains the only minivan available as a plug-in, and it certainly excels in that niche. Its displays a tremendous fuel economy of 80 MPGe, with an all-electric range exceeding 30 miles and a total range greater than 500 miles. In addition to its plug-in capability, the Pacifica features a regenerative braking system that charges the battery with kinetic energy every time you stop. All three trim levels—Touring L, Limited, and Pinnacle—feature a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that partners with an electric motor and 16-kWh battery, providing a total system output of 260 horsepower. On top of that, the vehicle offers a terrific amount of interior space. With a total SAE volume of 197.3 cubic feet, the Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid, with second-row captain's chairs, comfortably seats seven people. Even in the third row, you get more than 36 inches of legroom. As for cargo space, this model offers a minimum of 32.3 cubic feet, which expands to a maximum of 165 cubic feet. The interior features are also impressive and conducive to family travel. Distributed around the cabin, you'll find 10 cup holders and more than enough USB ports to charge everyone's mobile devices. Parents in the front row can easily watch their passengers with the conversation mirror affixed to the rearview or with an optional interior camera. And for family entertainment, there's the innovative Uconnect Theater system, which includes two 10.1-inch rear-seat screens, streaming content, and a Blu-Ray player. Ram 1500 The Ram 1500 is one of the toughest and most dependable pickup trucks on the market today. Its eTorque mild hybrid system, introduced in the 2019 model, improved its fuel economy without compromising on power. The entry-level engine for the 2022 Ram 1500 is a V-6 that pairs with the eTorque system, which is also available with the higher-level 5.7-liter V-8. With this configuration, the Ram 1500 can get up to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway—several miles per gallon better than its competitors. You can expect even greater capability from the Ram brand in 2024 when we anticipate the release of the all-electric Ram 1500 EV model. Since the estimated range for this model is up to 500 miles, it will certainly outperform other electric pickups in terms of travel distance. Bad traffic is enough to ruin anyone's day. If you're looking to drive around in your new Chrysler or Dodge vehicle with limited impediments, you may want to avoid the worst traffic areas around Westchester, New York. Here's a list of places and times to avoid if you want a smooth, quick trip. Taconic State Parkway Taconic State Parkway, which some locals simply refer to as the TSP, stretches for 104 miles. To understand why it's a road with such heavy traffic, you can first learn about its history. The concept for Taconic State Parkway was first introduced in 1895, and it opened in 1924. Its construction continued over the next several years as builders expanded it into Putnam County and Southern Dutchess County. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt was responsible for the parkway's expansion, as he wanted a scenic road that stretched through the Hudson Valley area. While this road was a good idea when Westchester wasn't as populous, it has since developed into a dangerous situation. Most of Taconic State Parkway is only two lanes across, which means that it has trouble accommodating lots of cars during busy times. One report found that from early 2011 until mid-2014, more than 2,000 car accidents had occurred on the parkway. Most of these accidents occurred in Putnam County and Westchester County. Taconic State Parkway is particularly crowded on the southern stretches. In the morning, many drivers head to their jobs in New York City. This flow of vehicles creates heavy congestion. Conditions like snow, rain, and fog create even more severe traffic, as drivers have difficulty navigating the narrow, winding road. Reckless driving on this road is common, and frustrated drivers may be to blame. In 2015, police officers handed out more than 54,000 tickets, and most of them were to drivers traveling along the stretches of Putnam County and Westchester County. Speeding tends to be the primary offense. One of the most dangerous spots on the Taconic State Parkway used to be the Pudding Street intersection. Drivers traveling along Pudding Street had to cross the northbound and southbound lanes of Taconic State Highway to continue on their route. In 2020, a construction team added an overpass to make this area safer. Despite this slight improvement, it's best to avoid Taconic State Highway whenever possible. Amsterdam Avenue Tenth Avenue, which locals refer to as Amsterdam Avenue, is a road with heavy traffic, especially as locals head into Manhattan in the morning. It's a one-way road for a bit, as it carries cars heading north as far as West 110th Street. After that, it picks up as a two-way street. Amsterdam Avenue shares the nickname "Death Avenue" with its Eleventh Avenue counterpart, as it's quite narrow and can't adequately support the thousands of cars that pass through every morning and night. In 2016, a construction team installed a protected bike lane to help cyclists travel safely. This lane stretches from 72nd Street to 110th Street and has made the stretch a little safer for cyclists. However, the lane was repurposed from a lane that once contained car traffic, and drivers have noticed a difference. Car traffic seems to inch even slower, so you'll have to leave much earlier if you want to make it where you need to be on time. Cars seem to constantly stop and go, as the red lights cause severe backups in the morning. Drivers have to be attentive or risk getting into rear-end collisions. They also have to be aware of other drivers unsafely turning in from adjacent roads out of frustration. Avoiding Amsterdam Avenue is a great way to have some peace of mind during your morning commute or ride home from work. Palisades Center is one of the largest shopping malls in both New York and the United States, so it draws a crowd. New York State Route 59 is a common way to get here, so you'll likely hit a lot of traffic even if this isn't your destination. As far as accidents go, collisions are common at the exits and entrances of the NYS Thruway. These entry and exit points are poorly designed and have confusing signage, so these challenges further impede traffic. U.S. Route 6 in New York U.S. Route 6 spans over 400 miles from Pennsylvania to Ohio, and nearly 78 miles of it occurs in New York. There's a mere mile stretch of this road along the Yorktown and Cortlandt border that gets particularly backed up between 7 and 9 a.m. Even though builders eventually expanded this road to include four lanes, it remains the source of heavy traffic. This road is common for people traveling to different states, so you may be able to avoid it if you're staying in New York. You might be able to hop onto NY 6N, which is an alternative route to U.S. Route 6 in New York. It travels through Westchester County and other areas and is often less congested. First, you can pick up Route 15 from Paramus off Interstate 80 in Dover. From there, you can travel north through the hills and forests, passing picturesque farms and fields filled with gurgling streams and rushing rivers. In less than 40 minutes, you should reach Augusta from Dover, where Route 15 ends and Route 206 begins. We suggest continuing on Route 206 north into Stokes State Forest, 10 minutes north. A fall drive through Stokes State Forest rewards you with exceptional fall foliage, but don't stop there. Instead, continue to Dingman's Ferry via Route 206 to Tuttles Corner/Dingmans Road. Dingmans Ferry sits in Pennsylvania, and you can reach it by crossing the beautiful Dingmans Ferry Bridge. Around Dingmans Ferry, you'll find fantastic photo opportunities at Factory Falls, Fulmer Falls, Dear Leap Falls, Silverthread Falls, and Dingmans Falls all along Dingmans Creek. Ocean Drive If you love a scenic seaside drive, Ocean Drive delivers. This picturesque route starts south of Atlantic City and takes a series of local roads along the New Jersey coastline until Cape May. There's so much to see and do along the way, such as Gillian's Wonderland Pier amusement park in Ocean City, to Wildwood, a series of beachfront amusement parks including Mariner's Pier. You don't need GPS to take this route. Instead, follow the gull signs that lead the way. New York City Jeep Club This Jeep-exclusive off-roading club is dedicated to Jeep owners and adventure enthusiasts from New York City's five boroughs and Long Island, but it's open to new members from all over the upstate New York area. Members officially meet on the last Friday of each month, but usually have more frequent off-roading trips. Their events gather club members together to discuss Jeeps and more but are also good opportunities to find new ways of helping community members in need of food and other necessities. The club was started in 2009 by two friends from Queens, a couple of dirt-bike enthusiasts who had just gotten some worn-out Jeeps. Repairing the Jeeps exposed them to the exciting world of off-road vehicle repairs and enhancements. They quickly discovered how many people are passionate about Jeeps and the huge number of available aftermarket components they can fit on their vehicles. Although initially, they couldn't find fellow Jeep enthusiasts in their area, their club steadily grew over time and evolved into one of the most well-known in New York State.
