A little more brains and a little less brawn. That's the direction Dodge is seeking to go with the Challenger, one of the staples of the brand that has thundered across American roadways for over 50 years. Dodge announced in 2022 that the 2023 model year would be the final ride for the gas-powered Challenger, marking the end of an era for the iconic muscle car. But we expect the spirit of the Challenger, and perhaps even the name itself, to live on in the form of the first electric muscle car coming to a dealership near you in 2024. Read below for more information about why Dodge is discontinuing the gas-powered version of the Challenger and what's in store for the future of the brand. Why Is Dodge Discontinuing the Challenger? To be clear, Dodge is officially only discontinuing the gas-powered Challenger fueled by its famous HEMI engine. Dodge made clear its intention to unveil an electric-powered muscle car in 2024 with the rollout of the electric Charger Daytona SRT concept car in the fall of 2022. And there's speculation within the industry that the brand's electric lineup may include more than one model and that one of those models may be donned with the Challenger name. At the root of the decision to put an end to the HEMI-powered Challenger is Dodge's commitment to electric cars and what the brand believes is the future of American driving. The automotive industry is experiencing a seismic shift as concerns about fossil fuels and climate change persist, gas prices soar, and an increasing number of Americans are turning to hybrid and electric alternatives. There are tax credits for consumers who purchase electric vehicles and even legislation in the works in a number of states aimed to curb the sale of gas-powered cars in years to come. As a result, practically every major manufacturer has at least one alternative-fuel model in its lineup. Dodge introduced its first plug-in hybrid, the Hornet, for the 2023 model year. And Dodge's parent company, Stellantis, is investing $99 million in manufacturing plants for electric engines and batteries. It may not be long before you're humming around Cortlandt in an electric Dodge muscle car. The Challenger is not the only Dodge muscle car to undergo such a transformation either. The Challenger's sibling, the Charger, is also being discontinued in its gas-powered form after 2023. And like the Challenger, the Charger is also expected to be reinvented as an electric car and ready to hit the pavement in 2024. The 2023 Dodge Challenger After looking ahead to the future but before reflecting on the past, let's focus on the present. Instead of a funeral, Dodge has thrown a celebration of life for the Challenger. Because 2023 represents the final model year of the current Challenger, Dodge has pulled out all the stops and issued a "Last Call" badging for this year's class. Special edition models feature a plaque under the hood, and Dodge returned several previously retired colors to the 2023 palette. Here are the six different special edition builds of the Challenger available in the 2023 model lineup: Demon 170. Black Ghost. Shakedown. Swinger. 345 R/T. Blacktop. The Demon 170 is the highlight of the bunch and can achieve 1,025 horsepower with the help of Dodge's famous Hellcat V-8 engine. Dodge is only planning to produce 3,300 of these cars, with 3,000 of them going to the U.S. market. These are the non-special edition Challengers in the 2023 lineup: SXT. GT. R/T. R/T Scat Pack. R/T Scat Pack Widebody. SRT Hellcat Jailbreak. SRT Hellcat Widebody Jailbreak. SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak. SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody Jailbreak. SRT Super Stock. The base-level SXT generates 303 horsepower, while the SRT Super Stock tops out the lineup at 807 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque. The History of the Challenger Dodge introduced the first Challenger in the fall of 1969 for the 1970 model year, and it featured the industry's first molded polypropylene door panels. There were two trims available during the initial launch, a standard, and an R/T, both of which came available in a coupe or convertible. The standard Challenger sold for just $2,850. Dodge's famous HEMI engine was along for the ride from the get-go, and the first Challengers to leave the assembly line did so with a maximum of 425 horsepower. This first generation of Dodge Challengers lasted through 1974. After a brief hiatus, Dodge introduced a second generation of Challengers in 1978 and they continued through 1983. These Challengers merged away from the classic muscle car design toward a sportier feel and featured less powerful engines than their predecessors. Dodge then shelved the Challenger line for 25 years before reintroducing it in 2008. This third generation of the Challenger has continued to the present day and pays homage to the muscle car vision of the original Challenger. In 2021, the Dodge Challenger topped longtime rivals such as the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro to become the best-selling muscle car in the U.S., a title the model then repeated in 2022. The Challenger also won an Automotive Loyalty award from IHS Markit in 2022, recognizing the model's ability to keep customers within the Dodge brand. This part of New York State is rife with river towns, ponds, and reservoirs with ample stock for anglers to enjoy. Here are our top picks for fishing around Cortlandt. Croton Gorge Park Croton Gorge Park offers shore fishing along the Croton River just below the New Croton Dam. This area has a liberal stock of brown and rainbow trout. From here, the Croton River flows 3.1 miles to the Hudson River. The best season for fishing this part of the river is from April 1 through Oct. 15. Remember that there's a daily limit of five fish of any size. Also, the New Croton Reservoir Outlet is the only part of the Croton River where you're not required to have a Public Access Permit. You'll find plenty of large fish in the New Croton Reservoir. The reservoir spans 2,182 acres, with a maximum depth of 120 feet. The bass there often weigh 7 pounds or more, and you can expect to catch 3-pound crappies. The New Croton Reservoir also features chain pickerel, common carp, brown bullhead, sunfish, and yellow and white perch. You must have a free New York City Department of Environmental Protection watershed access permit to fish the reservoir. Croton Gorge Park is open from sunrise to sunset. There's a seasonal parking fee of $5 with a park pass or $10 without a pass from May through Labor Day. Location: 35 Yorktown Road, Croton-on-Hudson. Croton Point Park Spanning 508 acres, Croton Point Park offers ample fishing opportunities along the Hudson River's eastern shore. The park also offers camping, hiking, and swimming if you want to diversify your adventures over a weekend of angling. This spot is popular for striped bass, river herring, and American shad. You can cast your line from the dock, shore, or boat. The Croton Point Park boat access can accommodate canoes, kayaks, and car-top carried boats. The striped bass season is from April 1 through Nov. 30. There's a daily limit of one bass, which must measure between 18 and 28 inches. Open season for Hudson River anadromous river herring is from March 15 through June 15. You may possess 10 per angler or 50 per group of boat anglers, whichever is lower. The park is open from 8 a.m. to dusk year-round. Parking is $5 with a park pass or $10 without a park pass on weekends only in May and September and daily from late May through Labor Day. Location: 1A Croton Point Ave., Croton-on-Hudson. Bronx River Reservation The Bronx River Reservation offers prime fishing opportunities on Bronxville and Crestwood Lakes. You can park for free on the street for convenient access to these spots. The Bronx River Reservation features bass, perch, and sunfish. You'll only need a state fishing license to fish here. Location: Bronx River Parkway from Yonkers to Valhalla. George's Island Park George's Island Park offers ample waterfront along the Hudson River and a freshwater pond. Pull your eyes away from the water and you'll likely see stunning sights like eagles soaring above. Fishing from George's Island Park, you'll typically find American shad, striped bass, and river herring. You must have a recreational marine fishing license for migratory marine species and a freshwater fishing license for freshwater species. You may fish for river herring from March 15 through June 15, taking no more than 10 per angler or 50 per boat group, whichever is lower. The season for striped bass is from April 1 through Nov. 30, and all bass must measure at least 18 inches long and be no more than 28 inches long. The George's Island Park ramp accommodates boat lengths of up to 21 feet. This ramp is open from April through October. You must pay a boat fee of $25 with a park pass or $40 without a pass. There is a parking fee of $5 with a park pass or $10 without a park pass from late May through Labor Day and on weekends only in May and September. George's Island Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk. Location: Dutch Street, Montrose. Pocantico Lake Pocantico Lake spans 69 acres within Pocantico Lake County Park. Situated between Pleasantville and Sleepy Hollow, this park is largely undeveloped, with opportunities for rustic hiking, undisturbed nature study, and peaceful fishing excursions. An abandoned stretch of Pocantico Lake Road runs around the lake's eastern shore from the dam at the lake's southern end to Briarcliff Manor to the north. There are no marked trails within the park, so you should adventure carefully if you head off the road. Pocantico Lake has smallmouth bass, brown trout, pickerel, bluegill, crappie, and sunfish. The Pocantico River tributary is well-stocked with brown trout just south of the park. You must have a New York fishing license to catch fish in these waters. Location: Old Sleepy Hollow Road, Pleasantville. Wampus Pond Wampus Pond, also known as Wampus Lake Reservoir, covers 38 acres in Westchester County, New York. The easiest access point is Wampus Pond Park. The park has a boathouse with restrooms open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the summer through early fall. Boat rentals with a park pass are $10 an hour or $50 daily. Boat rentals are $12 an hour or $60 a day without a park pass. The fee to bring in a car-top boat is $5 with a park pass or $10 without. Wampus Lake's waters teem with brown trout, smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, crappie, and carp. You may find some parts of the lake have dense floating leaves and submerged vegetation, so remember to navigate carefully. Location: Route 128, Armonk. But before you do, remember that this could cause complications with your Uconnect system since it's going to essentially wipe it clean. To do a hard reset on your Jeep Compass Uconnect system, you'll need to work your way through the following steps: Press the up and down buttons for the temperature at the same time and hold them for at least five seconds. Look for a menu to appear on your screen and select the option that will allow you to perform a hard reset on your Jeep Compass Uconnect system. Pack a lunch, let the kids run, and soak up the springtime air. The park also features a soccer field, two softball fields, and an all-purpose lacrosse field for additional recreation. The Mickey Carbone Pavilion is a large, covered picnic pavilion with several tables, which is an excellent place for a bite when not in use. If you're hosting a special event, you can reserve the pavilion for up to 200 people. Weekday rates are $75 for 25 to 100 people and $150 for 101 to 200 people. On weekends and holidays, pavilion rental is $150 for up to 100 people and $200 for up to 200 people. Sprout Brook Park also features the Cortlandt Dog Park. Situated between the soccer and softball fields, the park offers the perfect place for pups to play. The fenced park has both small dog and large dog areas. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted in the large dog area, and children under the age of 5 are not permitted in either dog park. Dogs must be supervised at all times, and owners may not bring more than three dogs at a time. There's no fee to enjoy the dog park. Location: 130 Sprout Brook Road, Cortlandt. Cortlandt Waterfront Park The Cortlandt Waterfront Park sits along the Hudson River, offering beautiful views and plenty of manicured lawns where you can relax and enjoy the warming days of spring. The park covers nearly 30 acres and includes a pedestrian trail from Broadway to Riverview Avenue, a picturesque overlook with benches, an aviation-themed playground, and horseshoe pits. Cortland Waterfront Park's great lawn and dance floor are ideal for live music events. In summer, the great lawn also hosts outdoor movies. On Thursday nights from June through August, the park frequently offers music and movies, but you don't have to wait for summer to enjoy the space. The park has a boat launch and fishing pier where you can enjoy both fishing and crabbing. Avian enthusiasts will find outstanding opportunities for birding with blue herons, red-tailed hawks, and eagles in the area. Location: 77 Riverview Ave., Verplanck. Hours: 7 a.m. to dusk. Jane E. Lytle Memorial Croton Arboretum You can access Jane E. Lytle Memorial Croton Arboretum via a public-access easement through the adjacent golf course. The arboretum covers 22 acres featuring a rich wildlife habitat of woods and wetlands brimming with plants and animals. The land was donated to the Village of Croton in 1991 to preserve the endangered wetland habitat within. The arboretum hosts conservation programs and educational activities to help promote wetland restoration, water quality monitoring, and habitat preservation. The arboretum's main trail loop covers about 0.6 miles and includes a boardwalk over portions of the swamp as well as three bridges. You can easily traverse the central loop in around 20 minutes, but you may want to linger longer to take in the sights. The loop also has several offshoots that you can explore to extend your time in the area. The Highland Trail branches off to the Highland Lookout and Brinton Brook Sanctuary, whereas the Overlook Trail and Rubin's Trail branch off into the upland hardwood forest. Location: 10 Fox Road, Croton-On-Hudson. Hours: Dawn to dusk, daily. Lake Meahagh Park Lake Meahagh Park is a popular springtime spot for a leisurely walk and birdwatching. Visitors eagerly seek out beautiful bald eagle sightings here. The park's walking path also offers charming views of the Hudson River. Families may also want to stop and explore the Trailside Museums and Zoo, which houses injured and orphaned animals. You can view the resident beaver, bobcat, red fox, black bears, coyotes, turkey vultures, great horned owl, and more. The zoo also includes a butterfly garden, a geology museum, and a historical museum. If you're looking for something more rugged, try the challenging Popolopen Torne, which climbs 500 feet to a breathtaking vista over the park. This trail covers 4.8 miles using the roadways or 6.3 miles if you take the Fort Montgomery route. The 6.8-mile Bald Mountain trail is another challenging option that climbs almost 1,000 feet to the top of Bald Mountain. Location: Palisades Parkway or Route 9W N. Bear Mountain. You can reduce the time and charge the vehicle in just about two hours by using an available 240-volt Level 2 charger. However, remember that the estimated charging time is based on a completely discharged high-voltage battery. Your Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid's charging time varies based on several factors, such as the battery's condition, age, state of charge, and temperature, as well as the available current being provided to the charger from its power source. The Durango has been a favorite car among Dodge fans for over three decades, but have you ever wondered about the history of this vehicle? The story behind the Dodge Durango's evolution is a rather complicated one. As we draw closer to this vehicle's anticipated discontinuation in 2024, let's take a closer look at the behind-the-scenes history of the Dodge Durango. New Vehicle Offers Used Inventory Service Center History of the Dodge Durango The mid-sized SUV, the Dodge Durango, first emerged on the automobile scene in 1997. With its design modeled after a pickup truck with a covered trunk, Dodge hoped to appeal to prospective customers looking for an SUV midway between smaller models like the Ford Explorer and larger cars like the Chevrolet Tahoe. Since then, this beloved vehicle has gone through four generations. The Durango also briefly disappeared from the car scene between 2009 and 2011 before returning to the market. The Story of the Durango Name Did you know that the Dodge Durango received its name from a city in Colorado? Durango is a small town in this state known for its historical connections to America's vast railroad system. This city in Colorado was named after a Mexican state called Durango. By naming this SUV Durango, Dodge hoped to emphasize its revolutionary appearance on the automobile scene. The Evolution of the Durango Dodge first introduced the 1998 model of the Durango toward the end of 1997 as a replacement for its Ramcharger line of vehicles, which Dodge had produced for 28 years. Originally, the Dodge Durango had much of its platform in common with the Dakota pickup truck, meaning that it shared many of the Dakota truck's exterior and interior styling features. The primary change to the Durango's second generation was the introduction of the new and highly powerful 5.7-liter Hemi engine in the lineup. With the reappearance of the Durango on the market in 2011 for its third generation, Dodge made extensive changes inside and out, including giving consumers a choice between a V6 and a V8 engine and a much more spacious interior for its three rows. For its fourth and final iteration in 2020, Dodge decked out the Durango with top-of-the-line exterior features and a choice between a 3.5-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter V8 Hemi engine. Dodge has already announced that the forthcoming 2024 model of the Durango will be the vehicle's last appearance on the market before discontinuation. This is for a few reasons, including that Dodge wants to spend more time adding or updating hybrid and electric cars to its product lines and that the company noticed a decrease in Durango sales over the years. That said, Dodge has yet to comment on what the final 2024 model could look like or if an electrified replacement model exists. Changes to the Durango Exterior When Dodge first released the Durango, this SUV had numerous exterior elements in a retro style, such as its front fenders flared out and positioned lower than the hood, a crosshair grille design, and narrow horizontal headlights. The curved windshield, however, gave the Durango body a modern touch. With the release of the second generation of the Durango, its chassis continued to resemble the Dakota pickup truck, but that all changed in 2007 thanks to the redesigned hood of the vehicle. By the time the third generation of the Durango rolled around, Dodge made an apparent effort to distinguish this SUV from both the Dakota pickup truck and Dodge's other models. The redesigned exterior gave the Durango a more muscular appearance thanks to its sculpted hood, raised front bumper, and slimmed-down split crosshair grille. The rear also now featured glamorous LED racetrack tail lamps and a newly designed trailer hitch. Although the fourth generation received fewer updates to its exterior, the brand-new bumper, grille, and LED headlights gave the Durango a much more modern appearance. How the Durango's Features Changed In its first iteration, much of the Durango's interior resembled the Dakota pickup truck, including a similar dashboard design. A key difference was that the Durango offered a third row of rear-facing seats, allowing the vehicle to fit up to eight people. Dodge later removed this feature because of low market demand and replaced it with the now customary third row facing toward the front of the car, allowing seven people to fit comfortably within the Durango. While the second generation of the Durango more or less possesses the same interior features, the reappearance of the Durango on the car scene in 2011 offered many more stylish and technologically advanced updates. This included many outstanding safety features, such as tire pressure monitoring, all-speed traction control, rear parking assistance, and electronic stability control. The third generation also added touch screens in either a 5-inch or 8.4-inch size. Come 2020, the interior of the Durango received further updates. This included new materials and a standard UConnect infotainment system. Durango Through the Years: Engines and Fuel Efficiency With the V8 engine in its first generation, the Durango achieved 14 mpg in city conditions and 19 mpg while traveling along the highway. This engine also had an impressive 238 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the engine upgrades of the second edition, the Durango boosted its city mpg to 16 and its highway to 21. The V8 engine in this second generation also raised its horsepower to 349. As the Durango evolved, it became even more powerful. With the advent of the third generation, the Durango could reach 294 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque thanks to its V6 engine, compared to 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque with the V8 engine. By 2020, the Durango will also become much more fuel-efficient despite its large and heavy frame, scoring 18 mpg in city conditions and 26 mpg along the highway. Just as with the Westchester Knicks, watching the Hudson Valley Renegades means watching a lot of talented, up-and-coming players who may soon be called up to the big leagues. Some of the many former Renegade players that made a name for themselves in Major League Baseball (MLB) include Scott Podsednik, Ryan Dempster, Joe Kennedy, Matt Diaz, Wade Davis, and Toby Hall. Podsednik might be the most famous former Renegade player, as he was playing with the Chicago White Sox when they won the World Series in 2005. Take your family along to go watch the Renegades play live on their home turf of Dutchess Stadium. New York Cosmos Soccer’s popularity in the US has quickly been rising over the past decade. If you want to scratch that live soccer match itch, check out a New York Cosmos game at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. Based in Uniondale, the New York Cosmos are a rebirth of the original team of the same name that played in the North American Soccer League from 1970 to 1985. The current version of the team was founded in 2010 and joined the National Independent Soccer Association. They went on to perform exceedingly well, winning the Soccer Bowl Trophy almost three years in a row (their wins were in 2013, 2015, and 2016). The team is currently on a temporary hiatus due to the recent pandemic, but you can expect a return to exciting live soccer play any day now. Keep your calendar open. Long Island Ducks Since their start in 2000, the Long Island Ducks have amassed a lot of local fans. Their games tend to attract families from all over the New York suburban and Tri-State area. If you’ve been looking for something different to do with the kids, why not introduce them to America’s favorite pastime by bringing them to watch a live game of baseball? The team is based in Central Islip and has always played their home games at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. The team has a lot of local pride; even the name itself is a nod to the duck-farming history of Long Island and the famous hockey team of the same name. As one might imagine for such a locally popular team, the Ducks attract a lot of up-and-coming talent to their team. Their very first manager was Bud Harrelson, who was a former MLB player himself. Today, the Ducks remain the only professional baseball team based on Long Island. They compete in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, a partner of MLB. Rockland Boulders Another team whose name takes its cue from the local environment is the Rockland Boulders, so named because of the abundance of massive boulders in Rockland County. Based in Pomona, the Rockland Boulders also nod to legendary New York sports history by donning blue and red uniforms. The blue references the old Brooklyn Dodgers, and the red respects the Rockland County Fire Training Center nearby. The team started playing back in 2011, originally in the Can-Am League, which was eventually absorbed into the Frontier League. If you watch a Boulders game, you can expect to be surrounded by tons of people, as the team leads the league in devoted fans. In 2012, the Boulders led the league in fan attendance, counting 161,375 spectators over the course of the season. Head to a game at Clover Stadium and cheer on the talented baseball players while your kids learn the game and enjoy the team’s fun mascot, Boulder Bird. If you or your friends have children coming with you, they're allowed in the beer garden, but the restaurant requires you to supervise them the entire time. There's an outdoor patio, but it's typically only open during the warmer season. Although the menu is subject to change daily, you may enjoy some of these tasty local and global beverages: Blackberry brown ale. Classic lager. Vodka pink lemonade. White sangria. North Fork merlot. Pair your drinks with some appetizers and meals, like: Pepperoni craft pizza. Bacon truffle mac and cheese. Nashville hot chicken. Warm pretzels. CLBC regular or smoked wings. Additionally, there are non-alcoholic options. Reservations aren't required at this location, but you can make them to ensure your spot during a dinner rush. However, if you have a group of 15 people, you're required to make a Big Group package reservation with the restaurant. With this package, you get a table for three hours, and if you select an added open bar package, you must pre-order the food. For larger groups with over 35 individuals, the brewery considers it a private event, which you must book online. Pickup and delivery orders are also available. Beer Hall hours: Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday from 2 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., Sunday from noon to 8 p.m., and closed on Monday and Tuesday. This location has over 100 tequila and mezcal options, which may make your drink decision challenging, but either way, you know you're going to get something refreshing and flavorful.
