Feb 10, 2022

It’s Saturday morning, you worked hard the past week, and you deserve a lovely Saturday afternoon. The question to ask is, where do you go? Maybe you’ve just moved and are new in town, or perhaps you’re looking for something different from your go-to hangout spots. Whatever the reason, Cortlandt, New York, is home to a plethora of fun, exciting, and unique locations to spice up your weekend and rave about to your friends at work.

From thrilling excursions to exciting new experiences, let’s look at some of the beautiful places in and around Cortlandt and make your next adventure unforgettable.

Bruised Apple Books

You can learn a lot about a person from the books they read, and what better way to share your interests than at the family-owned and -run Bruised Apple Books? About 10 minutes away in Peekskill, this shop has been buying, selling, and sharing memories since 1993 and offers a uniquely personal touch. Bruised Apple prides itself on its small business design with hand-painted signs and one-of-a-kind decor. You could spend hours investigating its many clippings and letters before even getting to the books. And boy, can you find a lot of books.

Once you have taken in the shop’s eclectic beauty, split off and find a book for the people you’re with, and have them do the same. Share the experience and a treasure hunt none of you will forget. Bruised Apple Books’ selection is vast, with 200 subject headings and plenty of books on local topics such as the history and nature of the Hudson Valley. While there, don’t forget to browse the vinyl collection, which rivals the books. This cozy bookstore with spacious aisles and homemade touches is worth a visit.

Hudson Valley MOCA

Museums are truly incredible places. They hold our histories and tell us the stories of those who came before us. Even art museums show us and teach us about the world, and the Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art in Peekskill is undoubtedly no exception. Spend your Saturday walking the halls of this incredible nonprofit center where you can see the work of internationally renowned creators next to that of our up-and-coming local artists. If you’re looking for a quiet, engaging, and thoughtful retreat from the hectic week, this is the perfect place to go.

Visiting the Hudson Valley MOCA may fill you with wonder or inspiration, but by spending your Saturday there, you’re enriching the community, as well. You might see signs of this around the center in things like the tile benches from the 2009 “The Tile Project.” The MOCA works closely with the Hudson Valley to reach out to budding artists throughout the community and help them grow into their talent. This is an adventure that brings you joy from experience and from knowing you’re helping the community grow.

Spins Hudson

An incredible and exciting Saturday is calling! Spins Hudson has just about every wild thing you could want to do all in one place. Whether you’re going on a thrilling date night or want to take your kids someplace, they’ll remember for years, and this is the place to go.

With ax throwing, ropes courses, virtual reality experiences, an arcade, and even classic laser tag, this is a place where you can be a kid again, at least for a little while. Plus, having won the 914INC.’s Best of Business Award two years running, you can rest assured you and your loved ones are safe on these wild experiences.

Are you a fan of playing video games and winning prizes? Check out the 5,000 square-foot arcade space with more than 50 top industry games, then spend time in VR with a reality-bending co-op experience. After that, head over to the two-story epic laser tag arena and battle it out with your friends.

If you’ve ever played a round of darts and thought, “this would be better with something bigger,” then ax-throwing is exactly what you need to try. If you need even more of a thrill, then the indoor or outdoor ropes course is for you. Challenge yourself to 70 elements, including the 50-foot-tall “Devil’s Climb” if you think you’re capable. The view at the top is impressive. Your Saturday has never been this wild.

The Back Nine Indoor Golf

Whether faced with rain or snow, wind or hail, you never want to stop an excellent golfing trip. A new twist to the noble sport offers indoor golfing experiences with more than 40 historic and famous courses to choose from, all without getting on a plane. You don’t have to golf alone, either. Bring your A-game, join a league, or form your own with your friends and compete to win weekly prizes.

Are your kids ready to learn to golf? Then bring them in for one-on-one golf instruction and lessons. You could even up your own game with one of the best instructors in the area.

When you’ve sunk your last hole and are ready for some good food, then head over to the sports bar. Grab a cold one and a hot meal and catch the latest game — The Back Nine plays them all. Plus, if you like live music, you’re in luck. With a different band every weekend, you can jam out with friends while enjoying one of the bar’s fantastic mixed drinks. The Back Nine Indoor Golf is so much more than your standard golf course, and it absolutely could be your new favorite place to hang out.
