What Gas Mileage Can You Expect From a Jeep Wrangler?

The amount of fuel that a Jeep Wrangler needs depends on its engine size and type. These numbers can also vary slightly based on many factors, such as your engine’s overall condition and the weight you’re carrying, but they’re a good indicator of how much gas your Wrangler will likely need. With the automatic transmission, the gas mileage ratings are 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Both have a combined city/highway gas mileage of 20 mpg.

Turbocharged 2.0-Liter Four-Cylinder

This engine choice generates a little more power than the previous, with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Two body types can be matched with this engine: a regular two-door model and a four-door model called the Unlimited. The latter is more significant, which also influences its fuel consumption. The two-door model’s fuel efficiency ratings are 23 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. The Unlimited version’s ratings are 22 mpg in city traffic, 24 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Turbocharged 3.0-Liter Diesel V-6

The Wrangler’s diesel version has a power output of 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine generates massive torque, which is useful when driving on steep off-road trails and helps the Wrangler travel more miles than gas-powered ones with the same amount of fuel, especially on longer drives. Its fuel efficiency ratings are 22 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined.

Hybrid 4xe

Recent Wrangler models include a plug-in hybrid version with a 2.0-liter dual overhead cam direct-injection turbocharged I-4 engine paired with an electric motor. This mix produces an impressive 375 horsepower and needs less fuel than gas-powered or diesel ones. When running on the hybrid system, the Wrangler can go an astonishing 49 miles on a single gallon of gas.

It can also travel 22 miles on electric power alone, meaning that a short commute to work won’t require any fuel. After the 22 miles, the battery runs out, but the Wrangler will run solely on its gas-powered engine, with a 20-mpg combined rating.

6.4-Liter V-8

The most powerful engine available for the Jeep Wrangler is a 6.4-liter V-8 that can generate up to 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Given this impressive output, it needs more gas than other engine types. Its fuel efficiency ratings are 13 mpg in city traffic, 17 mpg on the highway, and a combined 14 mpg.
