Shiki Sushi & Yakitori is a cozy establishment that opened in 2015. A glance at the menu reveals a number of soups and American-style rolls common to a lot of sushi establishments, but a deeper analysis indicates a greater depth to the offerings. The salads, for one thing, are more diverse than what you’re likely to find elsewhere. For another, there are five omakase options, where the diner puts their meal entirely in the chef’s control.

The true point of differentiation with Shiki, though, is the yakitori — skewers, typically of chicken. At Shiki, the yakitori offerings extend beyond chicken, with options such as eggplant, shiitake mushrooms, and shishito. For the optimum experience, consider a sampling of multiple yakitori along with one of the omakase options.

Ichiro

The menu at Ichiro is likely to appeal to both purists and fusionists alike. The sushi and sashimi offerings include all of the favorites — mackerel, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel, toro — which you can choose a la carte. If you’d like to put your meal in the hands of the chef, you can choose from the three omakase options or the generous combination platters, such as the 11-piece tuna- or salmon-lover platter or the 15-piece chirashi.

For lovers of unconventional sushi, the Special Roll menu features imaginative creations like the Ichiro Sushi Sandwich (spicy tuna, lobster salad, avocado, tomago, kani, and sesame soy paper) and the Out of Control Roll (a roll of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and asparagus topped with seared tuna, salmon, and yellowtail and spicy miso mayonnaise).

Haiku Asian Bistro isn’t strictly a sushi spot. The menu spans multiple Asian cuisines, including Indian, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Chinese. That being said, the majority of the menu real estate is sushi, and the sushi doesn’t disappoint. The classic sashimi and nigiri options are present, including yellowtails, tunas, salmons, eel, and sea urchin. You also have all the popular American-style rolls.

Haiku isn’t afraid to get playful, offering signature items like the Incredible Hulk Roll (yellowtail, tuna, and jalapeno inside white marble seaweed, topped with guacamole, wasabi mayonnaise, and black caviar), yellowtail ceviche, toro tartar, and a fresh tuna pizza.

Sushi Tatsu

The most obvious distinguishing characteristic of Sushi Tatsu is that it’s primarily a takeout restaurant. Dine-in is an option, but space is rather limited. What isn’t limited, though, is the menu, which offers a tremendous variety of traditional, Americanized, and downright novel sushi options.

It’s in the Special Rolls section of the menu that Sushi Tatsu gets truly creative, with such items as the lox roll (salmon and cream cheese), Kentucky roll (fried chicken), Texas roll (BBQ beef), and Mexican roll (yellowtail and jalapeno). If you’re more a purist, go for any of the expertly prepared options in the à la carte or Traditional Rolls section, the latter of which includes options not commonly seen in American sushi joints (e.g., ume shisho and negihama maki).

This is largely a no-frills establishment that focuses on the freshness of its ingredients, but there are a few signatures and relatively uncommon inclusions on the menu, such as takosu (octopus salad), tuna tataki, the Hartsdale Roll (a filling of sweet potato tempura, topped with lobster salad, flying fish roe, and spicy sweet mayonnaise).

Kyo Sushi doesn’t neglect the importance of dessert, either. If you’ve never had a tempura ice cream or cheesecake tempura — add that to your to-do list, head over to Kyo, and check it off.

Hastings-on-Hudson

Hastings-on-Hudson is a quaint village in Greenburgh. It’s a great place to live if you prefer not to own a car, as its 2-mile size makes everything walkable.

The village has quite a history, as it was originally a settlement of the Weckquaesgeek Algonquian people. During the American Revolution in the late 18th century, both warring sides declared the area that’s now Hastings-on-Hudson as neutral territory. After the war, Hastings-on-Hudson eventually became an official part of Greenburgh in 1879. A couple of years before this incorporation, Hastings-on-Hudson started in the stone quarrying industry, one of its earliest financial endeavors.

Today, Hastings-on-Hudson offers a unique assortment of homes. Its hilly streets feature homes in Tudor, Victorian, ranch, contemporary, and Cape Cod styles. Bannerman Castle is an abandoned military arsenal just 50 miles north of New York City on Pollepel Island, where it stood from 1901 until an unfortunate fire led to its abandonment in 1969. Luckily, a Hudson Valley local started the Bannerman Castle Trust in 1992, which led to the castle’s restoration and current status as a popular tourist attraction for guests ages 12 and up.

Nowadays, locals and visitors alike can take an evening cruise to and from the island to discover the castle’s unique history and enjoy classic movies on the island with a one-of-a-kind backdrop. Catch the Estuary Steward before it departs from the Beacon Waterfront at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to get a scenic ride to the island. Taste of RMV

One of the most beloved summer events in the Cortlandt area is none other than the Taste of RMV festival at the Red Maple Vineyard here in the Hudson Valley. This annual tradition offers some of the best food, wine, cider, and beer in the region, all of which you can sample at affordable prices. Enjoy farm-to-table delicacies representing traditions from around the world, with popular items on the tasting menu including Vietnamese mango veggie rolls, Mediterranean-inspired falafel pita sandwiches, Indian veggie samosas, and house-smoked pork shoulder Mexican tacos.

SeptemberFest Street Fair

The next event taking place this summer in the Hudson Valley region is the annual SeptemberFest Street Fair in nearby Nyack, New York. The SeptemberFest Street Fair is a great family-friendly outing filled with fun activities that people of all ages can enjoy. The fair features over 200 local vendors selling hand-crafted items, including jewelry, art, photography, antiques, and crafts, so there’s something for everyone, regardless of age or interests.

Sample food and drinks from some of Nyack’s most beloved dining establishments in a safe outdoor atmosphere and dedicate some time to exploring local restaurants and pubs in the area. The event also features live entertainment, including music performances from local artists. No pets are allowed at the fair, and all attendees must abide by CDC COVID-19 protocols. The SeptemberFest Street Fair will take place on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.

Kids’ Craft Connection

The final spot on our list of the top late summer events taking place in and around Cortlandt, New York, is the Kids’ Craft Connection at the historic Boscobel House and Gardens. Kids can enjoy a flashlight tour of the Boscobel mansion and its 68 acres of land, including immaculate gardens and a woodland trail. Enjoy a photo op on the mansion’s Great Lawn, which offers a one-of-a-kind view of the Hudson River. Activities include reenactments of historic chores, games, and crafts that make the perfect souvenir.

Kids’ Craft Connection takes place once a month throughout the summer and early autumn months, with events on Saturday, Sept. 10 and Oct. 8. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, more commonly known as FCA, makes up one-half of the merger that forms Stellantis, which is a multinational auto manufacturer that owns the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Fiat brands of motor vehicles. Stellantis has recognized the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in today’s automotive market and plans to broaden its own selection of EVs. In fact, the company plans to offer more than 75 battery EVs and realize at least 50% of U.S. sales in this segment by 2030.

Let’s look at some of the most exciting electric models currently available in this ever-growing lineup, as well as a potential all-electric pickup truck slated for release in 2024.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe

The 4xe is the plug-in hybrid version of Jeep’s popular Wrangler model. Originally introduced in late 2020, the 4xe model combines the ruggedness of the Wrangler with the fuel economy and instant torque of a battery electric car. The current 2022 release of the Wrangler 4xe is available in three distinct trims:

• Sahara 4xe.
• Rubicon 4xe.
• High Altitude 4xe.

At each trim level, you get a hybrid powertrain that includes two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, and a 2-liter turbocharged I-4 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Powered by this setup, you can expect a fuel economy of 49 MPGe as well as a 21-mile all-electric range. Altogether, you’re looking at a driving range of 370 miles before you need to stop to refuel. You can go from Cortland to New York City half a dozen times without a single stop at a fuel pump or charging station.

Keep in mind that this is still a Wrangler, so you get to enjoy its renowned off-roading capabilities and its powertrain’s environmental friendliness. Not only that, but you also get a variety of excellent features. All trims come with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, remote start capability, a Corning Gorilla Glass windshield, and an infotainment system that includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a nine-speaker sound system. With the Rubicon 4xe, you also get electronic locking differentials and an anti-roll bar, while the Sahara comes standard with driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors.

Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid

Although the history of the Pacifica goes back to the late 1990s, its current iteration saw its beginnings in the 2017 model when it hit the market as the first plug-in hybrid minivan. In 2022, it remains the only minivan available as a plug-in, and it certainly excels in that niche. Its displays a tremendous fuel economy of 80 MPGe, with an all-electric range exceeding 30 miles and a total range greater than 500 miles. In addition to its plug-in capability, the Pacifica features a regenerative braking system that charges the battery with kinetic energy every time you stop.

All three trim levels—Touring L, Limited, and Pinnacle—feature a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that partners with an electric motor and 16-kWh battery, providing a total system output of 260 horsepower. On top of that, the vehicle offers a terrific amount of interior space. With a total SAE volume of 197.3 cubic feet, the Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid, with second-row captain’s chairs, comfortably seats seven people. Even in the third row, you get more than 36 inches of legroom. As for cargo space, this model offers a minimum of 32.3 cubic feet, which expands to a maximum of 165 cubic feet.

The interior features are also impressive and conducive to family travel. Distributed around the cabin, you’ll find 10 cup holders and more than enough USB ports to charge everyone’s mobile devices. Parents in the front row can easily watch their passengers with the conversation mirror affixed to the rearview or with an optional interior camera. And for family entertainment, there’s the innovative Uconnect Theater system, which includes two 10.1-inch rear-seat screens, streaming content, and a Blu-Ray player.

Ram 1500

The Ram 1500 is one of the toughest and most dependable pickup trucks on the market today. Its eTorque mild hybrid system, introduced in the 2019 model, improved its fuel economy without compromising on power. The entry-level engine for the 2022 Ram 1500 is a V-6 that pairs with the eTorque system, which is also available with the higher-level 5.7-liter V-8. With this configuration, the Ram 1500 can get up to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway—several miles per gallon better than its competitors.

You can expect even greater capability from the Ram brand in 2024 when we anticipate the release of the all-electric Ram 1500 EV model. Since the estimated range for this model is up to 500 miles, it will certainly outperform other electric pickups in terms of travel distance. An optional range extender will also be available, which uses an internal combustion engine only to recharge the vehicle’s batteries.

So you’re looking for a place to take the kids where you can be outside on a nice day. Since you all love animals, what better way to spend a day outdoors than at a petting zoo? If you live in or near the Hudson Valley, several nearby farms and small zoos allow visitors to get up close to the animals. This is a great way to learn more about different animals, and it keeps the kids busy and entertained. Let’s look at some of the best petting zoos in the Hudson Valley.

Barton Orchards

Barton Orchards on Apple Tree Lane in Poughquag, New York, began as an apple orchard. Over the years, it has expanded into an agricultural adventure that the entire family will enjoy. You’ll find a large barn and gated area near the farm entrance where you can interact with the animals. The orchard has farm feed available that guests can take to feed the goats, and you can saunter down to visit the alpacas, rabbits, goats, pigs, mini horses, and peacocks.

There’s even a goat bridge for the goats to play on. You can watch as they frolic on and around the bridge.

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary rescues farm animals and gives them a safe place to live. Visitors get to meet the animals, learn more about how they ended up at the sanctuary, and educate themselves on animal rights. The farm is home to 400 rescued residents, including cows, goats, bunnies, chickens, pigs, sheep, turkeys, and ducks.

Visitors can take a tour around the sanctuary, pet some of the animals, and feed them the snacks that are provided by the tour leader.

Dubois Farms

Dubois Farms in Highland, New York, is a pick-your-own farm with strawberries, apples, peaches, and more. It also has several farm animals that guests can visit, a hayride that takes you around the grounds, and a miniature village called Tiny Town where the kids can play.

Bailiwick Animal Park & Riding Stables

Bailiwick Animal Park & Riding Stables is a family-owned ranch that sits on over 300 acres at the foot of the Catskills. The riding stable opened in 1963, and the animal park opened in 2007. The park has over 40 exhibits, including both domestic and exotic animals. The petting and feeding area is always popular with the kids, who can feed and pet the bunnies and other cute animals.

Guests of Bailiwick Animal Park can get up close to the animals and learn more about them. The park has all kinds of animals: from Bengal tigers to cute little bunnies. Most of the animals were rescued or donated, and they will all live out the rest of their lives at the zoo.

Trailside Museum and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park

You’ll find the Trailside Museum and Zoo in Bear Mountain State Park. It sits along a short section of the Appalachian Trail and features a paved path that takes visitors past several exhibits that feature native New York wildlife. Most of the animals were rescued and can no longer live in the wild.

The zoo is home to a variety of wildlife—from birds to fish, mammals, and amphibians. There’s also a Nature Study Museum, which has lots of information about the local wildlife, and the Herpetology Museum, where visitors can learn about native fish and reptiles.

The gardens and woodlands are fun to explore. Here, you’ll find micro-communities that showcase a diverse selection of plants and vegetation. There are rock outcroppings, low-lying moist pockets for plants that thrive in damp conditions, and a woodland pool and fernery.

The Trailside Museum and Zoo is a self-guided experience. You’ll find small signs along the way that serve as your naturalist guide and more prominent signs that provide detailed information.

Catskill Animal Sanctuary

The Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties is a sanctuary with over 300 rescued animals. As all the animals freely roam the grounds, don’t be surprised if a friendly chicken or goat approaches you while you’re exploring. The sanctuary offers tours from May through November on Saturdays and Sundays.

Some of the animals that you might meet at Catskill Animal Sanctuary include the goats Abram and Izzy; the pig, Amelia; the sheep, Atticus; and the cow, Blossom. There are also horses, turkeys, ducks, and many more.

Forsyth Nature Center

The Forsyth Nature Center is an outdoor learning center in uptown Kingston, New York. It’s part of the Kingston Parks and Recreation Department and has over 24 animal exhibits and beautiful gardens to explore. The nature center is open and accessible to the public all year long.

This nature center is great for getting close to nature and animals. Guests can feed apples to the steer and pet the alpacas and friendly lambs. Make sure to visit the turtle house and check out the domestic and wild birds and birds of prey. There’s also a reptile house and many small and large mammals that you can visit.

Kelder’s Farm

Kelder’s Farm in Kerhonkson has many farm animals, such as sheep, goats, cows, donkeys, and alpacas, that guests can pet. It is also home to one of the largest garden gnomes you will ever see. During a visit to the farm, the kids can play mini golf, have fun in the playground, and jump on the giant jumping pillow. Kelder’s Farm is open daily and offers strawberry, pumpkin, and apple picking, depending on the season. There are lots to explore at the large farmers market, and the kids will love the farm equipment, tube slides, and milk-a-cow activity.

When was the last time you rotated your tires? You have come to the right place if you’re not even sure about the common auto maintenance process. Learn what it means to get your tires rotated and why it’s important with our guide.

What Is a Tire Rotation?

With a tire rotation, your service technician changes the position of your tires. This service is essential because you want to ensure the rubber tread wears evenly. Front-wheel drive adds wear to that set of tires during accelerating, turning, and braking maneuvers, eroding the material more quickly than the back set and vice versa with rear-wheel-drive models. It’s that time of year. The weather is perfect for a day of hiking and exploring near Cortlandt. Whether you stay at a local park for a short hike or venture out of town for a more extended, more rigorous adventure, there are plenty of places to go. So, lace up your hiking shoes and get out to these local Cortlandt parks and beyond.

Blue Mountain Reservation

Blue Mountain Reservation in Westchester Co., New York, has 23 miles of trails to explore. This park features boulder-strewn terrain with two mountains, a hardwood forest, and several ponds and streams.

There are several trails to explore, including:

• Blue Mountain Twin Summits Trail.
• Blue Mountain Resveration Summit and Ned’s Long Trails.
• Blue Mountain Summit Loop.
• Blue Mountain via Dickey Brook and Limbo Trails.

If you’re looking for a long hike, the On Your Back, Boundary Trail, Blue Mountain Summit Loop, is the longest trail in the area. If you take this route, it goes for over six miles and will take you about two and a half hours to complete. This trail is a popular spot for hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners, but if you go during the quieter times of the day, you can have most of the trail to yourself.

Hudson Highlands Gateway Park

Spend your day at Hudson Highlands Gateway Park, and you’ll find five miles of trails to explore. The park has streams, steep slopes to test your endurance, meadows, and exposed rock. The Hudson Highlands Gateway Park Loop takes you through the park and up two different viewpoints. These high points were once used for signaling during the Revolutionary War.

Once you park, head to the blue trail that starts at a kiosk. You can look at the trail map to get an idea of the hike and read about the area’s history. If you follow the blue trail, you’ll take the park loop, but there are other trails to explore along the way if you want to make your hike longer. The red-blaze Annsville Creek Trail is an out-and-back trail that runs for less than a mile. You can take this to extend your hike and then continue on the blue trail loop.

The Hudson Highlands Upland Trail is another route in this park. It’s a quick 1.9 miles loop trail that will take most hikers less than an hour. Dogs are welcome on this trail but must be kept on a leash. It’s a relatively easy trail, but some steep parts can get slippery when covered with wet leaves.

Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve

The Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve in Yorktown, New York, covers 125 acres. It has a summit view at 831 feet with views of the Croton Reservoir and dam to the Hudson River. The hike up Turkey Mountain is perfect for when you want to get outside but don’t have much time. It’s steep enough to work up a sweat, and the view is worth it from the top.

The best route is up the Blue trail and down the White trail if you’re looking for something quick, but there are lots of other trails to explore. If you take the Blue trail, it runs for about two miles if you take it both ways.

The trails at Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve are well maintained. Wood footbridges help get you over wet areas, and everything is well-marked for easy navigation.

Croton Arboretum

The Jane E. Lytle Arboretum in Croton-on-Hudson is a variety of walking trails to explore. The trails run through 22 acres of woods and wetlands, and there’s even a handicap-accessible trail. Visitors can access the walking trails from dawn to dusk, and the Arboretum is also an excellent place for bird-watching and accessing more challenging hiking trails.

Anthony’s Nose

Anthony’s Nose is part of the Appalachian Trail that runs from Route 9D towards an overlook. The trail is almost like a well-maintained outdoor staircase that brings you to one of the most excellent views in the Hudson Valley. The top has a large clearing covered in large rocks with plenty of places to sit and relax while enjoying the view.

The first part of the hike is very steep, but the rest of the .75 miles to the overlook is a relatively flat old road. Expect to see several other hikers on the same path as you if you go on a nice day. It’s a popular spot.

If you want different views along the way to the summit, take the Camp Smith trail to the top. From the parking lot, choose the blue trail. It will take you on a 2.5-mile hike to the top. You’ll know you’re in the right spot to start your hike when you see the historic Toll House.

Croton Gorge Park

Croton Gorge Park is a fun place to spend the day exploring. You can see the falls and a large field at the dam’s base. A trail also leads you to the top of the dam and across the bridge. Since the bridge doesn’t allow motorized vehicles, you’ll have plenty of space to explore.

Croton Gorge Park also has trails that run along the river.

• The Croton Gorge Trail is a 1/2-mile trail that follows the Croton River ravine. You can access it from the Silver Lake Parking lot or the end of Cleveland Drive. 
• The Highland Trail is a wooded trail that goes around the Hudson National Golf Course and takes you to one of the highest points in Croton. You’ll get to enjoy panoramic views of the Hudson River. From here, you can access trails at the Brinton Brook Sanctuary.
• The Crossing is a one-mile paved trail that takes you across the Croton River.

In addition to the 2022 Ram 1500‘s trim levels, you’ll also get to choose your truck’s body style. However, your options vary from model to model:

• Tradesman and Big Horn: 6-foot-4-inch box with a quad cab or crew cab, or a 5-foot-7-inch box with a crew cab.
• Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited: Crew cab only, with a 5-foot-7-inch or 6-foot-4-inch box.
• Rebel and TRX: Crew cab with a 5-foot-7-inch box.

You’ll also have four engine options to choose from. These engines are available to most trim levels, except for the TRX’s supercharged V-8.

• A standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine produces 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque.
• A 5.7-liter V-8 engine that produces 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.
• A 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V-6 engine produces 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.
• A 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine produces 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Each of these engines is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Adequately equipped with the HEMI V-8 engine, the 2022 Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 pounds.

The Tradesman is the entry-level option for the 2022 Ram 1500, but it’s anything but bare-bones. The Tradesman is ideal for drivers looking for their next work truck. The Tradesman is also available as the Tradesman HFE, which stands for “High Fuel Efficiency.” This latter model can only be outfitted with a two-wheel-drive system, but the standard model can be upgraded with a four-wheel drive.

Laramie

The Laramie starts getting into luxury territory with its standard equipment. Those who want an ideal best-of-both-worlds model that balances budget and features may find what they’re looking for with the Laramie.

Standard exterior upgrades include power-folding side mirrors, LED headlights, chrome, and a power-sliding rear window. Opt for the 60/40-split multifunction tailgate for a more accessible truck bed. The Laramie’s cab keeps you more comfortable with dual-zone front air conditioning, leather upholstery, and more. The Laramie comes standard with an 8.4-inch central touch screen, an upgraded sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Laramie also comes equipped with a forward mitigation system that scans the road ahead to warn the driver of potential collisions and will even apply the truck’s brakes if needed. Drivers who want to forge their paths should get behind the 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel wheel. The Rebel gets a sports performance hood and switches out the chrome accents for tougher black accents. Its performance features include a locking rear axle, tow hooks, skid plates, and more. The Rebel’s interior is decked out in more durable cloth, vinyl materials, and sports rubber floor mats for easier cleanup after outdoor adventures.

Limited Longhorn

The Ram Limited Longhorn has a Southwestern ranch-style flair that speaks to the truck’s heritage. The Longhorn gets several exterior upgrades, including running board side steps, larger 20-inch wheels with the option to switch to 22-inch versions, and a power tailgate. The Longhorn’s cabin features genuine wood and metal-trimmed accents, bucket seats with leather-trimmed upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Limited

The ultimate in full-size luxury trucks, the Ram 1500 Limited is the model for drivers who want to reward themselves for their years of hard work. The Limited comes standard with the more powerful 5.7-liter V-8 engine.

The Limited also comes standard with the 12-inch touch screen, that’s an available upgrade for the lower trim levels. You’ll also get premium leather upholstery and a wireless smartphone charger. The otherwise optional blind-spot monitor with a rear cross-traffic alert system comes standard on the Limited. Use the standard four-corner air suspension system to keep your rides smooth and efficient. TRX

The TRX is a performance-tuned off-roading pickup that’s competition-ready. It comes exclusively with a four-wheel-drive system. The TRX’s engine makes it the most potent production pickup market.
