Most people think they know exactly what they are doing when it comes to keeping their car cleaned over time. You’ll hear all sorts of advice from other people and you may not be sure how true it is. In this article we are going to debunk some car washing myths so you can keep your car as clean as when it rolled off the lot.

Myth #1: Dishwashing detergent is the great for a wash, it’s soft on your plates and silver so it should work for the car, right? This is sort of right. It can work for tires and trim but for the best results always use a pH balanced car wash soap or shampoo with glossing conditioners.

Myth #2: Only professionals should use detail clay, not the average car owner. Well thankfully, everything comes with instructions including a detail clay. Feel free to use it yourself, in fact, you are much more susceptible to scratch or swirl your car’s paint using bad drying towels or a dirty wash sponge.

Myth #3: If it shines, it’s clean. It’s important to understand that cleaning is not the same as washing. Your car’s paint can look good but in reality be very dirty. You can test this by feeling how smooth or rough you car feels on the outside. If it’s rough, use detail clay to remove it safely.

Myth #4: Swirl marks come off after waxing. Swirl marks mean the paint is damaged or scratched. Polishing your vehicle is your answer here, it is the number one method for removing swirl marks.

Myth #5: Machine polishers can ruin the paint finish. A dual-action car polisher will do no harm if the user follows basic steps.

Myth #6: Soft clothes are the best for detailing. Absolutely not. They are stitched with polyester thread that will swirl and scratch your car’s clearcoat. Microfiber towels are the best towels for cleaning your vehicle.

Myth #7: Wax protection lasts up to 4 or even 5 years. While wax and paint sealants have improved, the environment around us has not. It is suggested to wax your car a couple times a year.
