Shopping for a reliable SUV invariably brings to mind the Jeep brand. Jeep’s 4×4 capability has earned its place at the top of the food chain with its decades of trail-proven prowess. The Wrangler sits high on the list of adventure-ready vehicles, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee has earned its place beside it for slightly different reasons. Six gas-powered trims offer various levels of comfort, convenience, and capability. The base model Laredo starts at $39,395, and prices top out at $66,550 for the top-tier Summit Reserve, which is loaded with luxury features you won’t find in other SUVs in its class. Five plug-in hybrid variants provide impressive power and efficiency led by the Trail-Rated Trailhawk 4xe. You can contact Bill Volz Westchester for pricing information on the 4xe.
The Grand Cherokee offers two-row and three-row variants to seat five or seven passengers, so growing families love the newest Grand Cherokee L. In addition, Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee 4xe with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which means it’s the most planet-friendly SUV in its class.
You have three 4×4 configurations to choose from Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. The latter features a rear electronic limited-slip differential. You also have three engine options. The Pentastar V-6 comes standard on most models, and the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine option provides additional power. Or you can go greener and have the 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine with plug-in electric hybrid technology.
Jeep has taken comfort to new levels in the 2023 Grand Cherokee, using exceptional materials, elevated craftsmanship, and innovative cabin design to please even the most discerning driver. The 16-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats are heated, ventilated, and massaging for the ultimate comfortable driving experience. In addition, leather upholstery, natural wood trim, ambient interior lighting, and quilted leather door trim add refinement and style.
The cabin seats offer configurations for multiple cargo or seating arrangements. If necessary, you can fold the second and third-row seats flat to create up to 84.6 cubic feet of space. Or, keep the seats up and carry seven people on your next adventure.
In-vehicle tech is through the 10.1-inch touch-screen display in the center stack, and it’s powered by the Uconnect 5 system. The preloaded Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth systems enable hands-free cellphone operation, so you can make calls, reply to texts, access navigation information, and stream your favorite music using simple, intuitive voice commands.
An optional passenger screen gives your front passenger their very own touch screen to use, so they can keep themselves entertained or act as your navigator.
Your favorite songs never sounded better than on the available 19-speaker McIntosh audio system. This operates on a 17-channel amplifier with a 10-inch subwoofer and delivers 950 watts of theater-quality sound. Additional tech includes a wireless charging pad, a digital rearview mirror, and a head-up display that projects critical driving data onto the windshield before you.
The standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 provides 293 horsepower, 260 lb-ft of torque, and tows 6,200 pounds. If you choose a model with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, you get 357 horsepower, 390 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,200-pound towing capacity. Opting for the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers an impressive 375 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque, and a 6,000-pound tow rating.
The available, class-exclusive Quadra-Lift Air Suspension system with electronic semi-active damping technology automatically lowers your ride height when driving at highway speeds to achieve maximize efficiency. In addition, when you go off-road, Quadra-Lift allows you to raise the height of your Grand Cherokee to clear obstacles on rough terrain.
In addition to the three 4×4 systems, you can add the Selec-Terrain traction management system to your Grand Cherokee. This gives you programmable drive modes to suit the weather and terrain. The modes include Auto for everyday driving around Cortlandt and beyond, Sport to dial in your steering, throttle, and suspension for a more thrilling drive, and Rock so you can crawl over off-road obstacles. When the weather turns, the Snow mode is designed for winter driving, and the Mud/Sand mode helps your Grand Cherokee handle soft surfaces on slippery trails or sandy beaches.
If you’re looking to save a little money buying a used Grand Cherokee, you aren’t alone. To help you choose the right model, we had our Grand Cherokee experts put together a list of the best model years.
Jeep started manufacturing the larger Grand Cherokee L in 2021. The most significant difference between the standard Grand Cherokee and the L variant is size. You get a larger cabin that seats up to seven with a second-row bench seat and a third-row. Shoppers can find many late-model variants in 4×2 or 4×4 configurations. Furthermore, these years still offer the latest cutting-edge in-vehicle tech and driver-assist systems.
Although 2016 marks the midway point of the generation that began in 2010, model years from 2016 and later had the fewest issues and highest reliability ratings of any Grand Cherokee. In addition, the premium interiors on the upper trims deliver the comfort and convenience you’d have to pay nearly twice as much to get in similar vehicles.
Beginning in 1998, Jeep started using a 5.9-liter V-8 engine that far outpaced the competition at the time. Functional hood vents were needed to keep the monstrous engine cool, but they added an aggressive look that appealed to off-road and street drivers alike. We know most SUV shoppers aren’t looking for something a decade or two old, but the solid Chrysler engine and Jeep 4×4 system were built to last.
